A Handshake Still Counts: The Case for Hiring a Family Firm

There's a certain kind of peace of mind you get when the person quoting for your new boiler is the same person who answered the phone. No call centre, no reference number, no 'someone will be with you between 8am and 6pm'. Just a name, a face, and a reputation that's been built one job at a time.

We're BJ & H, and we're a family-run trade business — so you'd be forgiven for thinking we'd say all this. But stick with us, because there's a genuine argument here that goes beyond sentimental marketing.

Your Home Isn't a Job Number

When a national firm sends a technician round, that person is one of hundreds, maybe thousands, covering a patch. They'll likely never see your house again. The company's brand absorbs the risk; the individual carries little of it.

With a family business, it's the opposite. If we do a shoddy job on your bathroom, that's not an anonymous complaint in a system somewhere — it's a conversation at the school gates, a bad word in the village shop, a neighbour who won't recommend us to their mum. Our name is quite literally on the side of the van. That accountability shapes every decision, from how we tidy up at the end of the day to whether we'll quietly redo a bit of work that didn't sit right with us.

Reputation Is the Only Marketing Budget

Big firms spend fortunes on advertising. Family trades businesses like ours spend nothing — because our marketing is the work. Word of mouth around a small town travels fast, and it travels honestly. When three-quarters of your jobs come from recommendations, you can't afford to cut corners. It's not just good ethics; it's basic survival.

That also means we're more likely to tell you the truth. If a repair will do instead of a replacement, we'll say so. A chain's incentive is often to sell you the package. Ours is to keep you coming back for the next twenty years.

Flexibility You Won't Find on a Booking Portal

Need us to pop back on a Saturday because you're at work all week? Want a quick opinion on something that's been nagging at you, no call-out fee, no drama? Family businesses can bend. We don't have to check a policy document or escalate to a regional manager. Decisions get made over a cup of tea, not in a head office three motorways away.

Questions Worth Asking Any Tradesperson

Whatever firm you choose — us or anyone else — here's what we'd want to know before signing a quote:

The Bottom Line

We're not saying national chains are all bad — sometimes they're the right fit, and plenty do decent work. But when it's your home, your family and your money, there's real value in hiring people who treat your house like it belongs to someone they know. Because odds are, before long, it practically does.

If you're local to us and want a straight answer and a fair quote, give BJ & H a bell. The kettle's usually on.
